There are various types of accommodation in Provence that will meet individual needs. In general, the level and quality of accommodation is excellent and the facilities are of a good standard and tastefully furnished.
Most establishments provide an en-suite bathroom but breakfast, le petit dejeuner, is excluded from the room price.
You can choose between a chambres d’hôtes (the French version of B&Bs), staying in cosy private houses surrounded by nature where you can often enjoy breakfast and meals made with local products or a mas the typical stone farmhouses with colourful wooden shutters where you can appreciate the true Provençal spirit.
If, on the other hand, you prefer a more relaxing holiday, in close contact with the people and the place, you can always rent a private house, in particular the gîtes ruraux, i.e. country houses, often also with a swimming pool, surrounded by nature, an ideal solution for those travelling with children and teenagers.
On the other hand, those travelling on a smaller budget can always opt for inexpensive solutions such as hostels, which are more readily available in large cities, or campsites, which are very popular in France, to be in contact with nature and for a holiday of freedom and convenience.
Travel Tips
- Cheap hotels apply the same rates all year round, while going up a range, prices vary according to three seasonal subdivisions: low season (October-November and February-March), mid season (March-May and September-October) and high season (June-September).
- During major events such as the Avignon Festival or the Ferias de Nimes, prices tend to increase and it is always advisable to book well in advance to access the best rates.
- In all hotels, a tourist tax is levied by law, usually set by the local authorities and ranging from 0.20 to 1.50 euro per person.
- Out of season, of course, prices are reduced, but one has to be careful of the annual two-week closure.
- In July and August, booking well in advance is always best, especially in coastal resorts.
