Louis Vuitton Foundation

The Louis Vuitton Foundation, with its building of spectacular modern architecture, is a centre dedicated to contemporary art in all its forms.

Inaugurated in 2014, the Louis Vuitton Foundation is a cultural centre dedicated to contemporary art. Housed in a spectacular futuristic building, it offers a permanent collection and temporary exhibitions of the highest calibre.

Immersed in the magnificent natural setting of the Bois de Boulogne, the green lung at the gates of Paris, the building is in itself an incredible work of architecture, which should be seen from the inside but also from the outside and which fits perfectly into the landscape.

Things to do at the Louis Vuitton Foundation

Created to promote and support contemporary art, over the years the Foundation has become a meeting place but above all an opportunity for exchanges and confrontation with modern artists and their public.

The architectural structure

The first great attraction of the museum is its spectacular architectural conformation: it resembles an iceberg resting on the water, with 12 glass sails inflated by the wind. An original work that does not go unnoticed.

The building is more than 40 metres high and covers an area of almost 12,000 square metres: super-bright and innovative, with terraces allowing fabulous panoramic views.

The foundation project was entrusted to the American architect Frank Gehry, to create a unique space dedicated to modern art and culture in Paris. The futuristic forms of the building fit perfectly into the heart of the Bois de Boulogne, a park of some 846 hectares, without creating friction or aesthetic distortion. The extraordinary beauty of the museum, reminiscent of a boat with its sails unfurled, is only the preamble to the visiting experience.

The majestic building is designed like a vessel sailing through the nature of the Jardin d’acclimatation, a park for young and old with a zoo, roller coaster and many other attractions.

The Foundation Museum

The Foundation is composed of 11 galleries spread over 3 levels, entirely dedicated to contemporary art. The Louis Vuitton Foundation is very active: it plays an important role in patronage, commissioning specific works for the museum from artists of the moment.

Indeed, thanks to the funds of the famous entrepreneur Bernard Arnault, the Foundation can guarantee the presence of the best of contemporary art. Nearly 1.4 million visitors visit the foundation each year and are left speechless by the skilful use of space: by creating interplays of gaps and white spaces, the works are set off to their best advantage. For lovers of contemporary art, the collection offers in particular works by Gerhard Richter, Bertrand Lavier and Christian Boltanski.

The museum’s mission is to create an evocative, emotional and reflective space on contemporary art.

The Bookshop

Also remarkable is the foundation’s bookshop, created as a multidisciplinary place dedicated to four thematic universes: contemporary art, architecture, applied arts, youth.

Exceptional works can be found here, including exhibition catalogues, monographs, limited editions and books on the foundation’s artists. There is also a library, which holds over 6,000 works and articles on art.

The starred restaurant

To end a unique experience in the art world on a high note, you can book a table at the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s starred restaurant, Le Frank: the skilful hands of chef Jean-Louis Nomicos create incredible dishes inspired by French cuisine, with unique contaminations.

The auditorium

The Vuitton foundation is oriented towards the promotion of art at 360°. Thus, an auditorium was also inaugurated where concerts of all kinds are held: from cello and piano performances, récital and dance to individual performances.

There are also workshops for the whole family, dedicated workshops for children aged 3 to 5, and plastic experiments for children aged 6 to 10, to name but a few.

How to get there

The Louis Vuitton Foundation is located in the Bois de Boulogne, right next to the Jardin d’Acclimatation. There are several ways to reach it by public transport.
