The EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is the only bi-national airport in the world: in fact, the airport was built by Switzerland entirely on French territory.
The airport is divided in two, one half serves the French side and the other half serves Switzerland. There are two customs offices inside and the border is in the centre of the airport. With a quick connection, travellers can enter Switzerland without going through French customs controls.
Its strategic location makes the airport a perfect arrival point for all those wishing to visit Alsace and its surroundings: in fact, the EuroAirport is located 30 km south-east of Mulhouse, only 3.5 km north-west of the city of Basel, Switzerland, and 74 km from Freiburg, Germany.
The city of Basel is only 3 km from the centre and getting there from the airport is very easy.
Line 50 of the BVB (Basel Bus company) connects the EuroAirport with the Basel railway station in about 20 minutes, making only 2 intermediate stops along the way, Kannenfeldplatz and Cargo. The frequency of journeys during peak hours is one bus every 7 minutes.
Another way to reach the centre of Basel comfortably is by taxi: in this case, you will have to go to the Swiss side of the airport and within 15 minutes you will be in the heart of the city.
The EuroAirport does not have an in-house train station, but just 2 kilometres from the terminal, on the French side, is the Saint Louis station, which can be reached by the Distribus shuttle No. 11.
From here, regional trains of the French company SNCF depart to various French locations, including Mulhouse. If you have time, it might be an idea to visit Basel and then take the train from the central station to the main towns of Alsace or other French regions.
In addition, the bus company Flixbus provides direct connections between the airport and Colmar, Strasbourg and other French cities.
To reach the German town of Freiburg, there are two options. A comfortable Flixbus bus takes you to the central bus station, located next to the Freiburg train station. The journey takes about an hour and the ticket can be conveniently purchased online.
Or, once you reach the main station in Basel, you can take a train of the German Bahn company to Freiburg or other locations in Germany.
Basel-Mulhous-Freiburg Airport is easily accessible from many French towns in a short time: it is only 5 minutes from Saint-Louis, the nearest village to the airport, 30 minutes from Mulhouse, 50 minutes from Colmar, 75 minutes from Strasbourg.
Switzerland is also very close to the international airport: it is only 5 minutes from Basel, 55 from Zurich, 60 from Berne and Lucerne . The Swiss side of the airport is connected to Basel by a customs road that crosses French territory without intermediate exits.
Finally, the German border is also only a few kilometres away: you can drive to Freiburg in 50 minutes and Baden Baden in 1 hour 40.
